SpaceX Posts Its First Profit as a Public Company — and AI Is Now Its Biggest Business
New subject (Q3 results, reported Tuesday Oct 20, 2026). SpaceX's second quarter as a public company (June 2026 IPO at $86B) delivered its first profit: revenue of $14.6 billion, up 161%, and net income of $4.4 billion versus a loss of about $1 billion a year ago. The engine was AI. Per Michael Parekh's read of the WSJ/CNBC reporting: "Revenue in what Elon now calls 'SpaceX Super Intelligence', built on xAI and Grok, the $60 billion Cursor acquisition, and renting out data center capacity to Google, Anthropic and others, jumped about ninefold to $7.6 billion. It is now SpaceX's largest business12, and it swung to a profit of $431 million" (AI-RTZ #1246). Starlink grew almost 70% to $5.2B with 13.6 million subscribers — and still produces most of the profit.
Why it matters for the capex story: the AI buildout's compute bill has become someone's P&L. "Anthropic is one of the biggest buyers of AI compute among the AI labs, committing hundreds of billions of dollars to Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Broadcom, neoclouds and SpaceXAI, where it committed about $85 billion. SpaceX is increasingly a seller of that compute, what I have called 'EWS', Elon Web Services. One company's compute bill is another company's AI revenue." Both companies are being valued around $2 trillion "with very different income statements."
This is the sell-side counterpart to Anthropic's $750B compute bill (Anthropic's Draft S-1 in Print: $80.7B H1 Loss (Mostly Paper), $16.3B H1 Revenue — and a Compute Bill That Could Hit $750B) and the debt-financed capex wave The AI Capex Debt Machine Widens: Broadcom Raising $50B+ for OpenAI's "Nexus" Chips, Oracle's Leaseback Talks — and Apollo Is in All Three Deals. It also de-risks — for now — the Apollo-led $40B chip-financing thesis: the AI unit is already cash-generating, not just capex-hungry. Watch whether "SpaceX Super Intelligence" sustaining a profit margin changes how lenders price the AI-debt deals still in flight.
