Aramco HQ Hit: The Houthi War Reaches Saudi Arabia's Corporate Core as Interceptors Run Low
UPDATE (Oct 14, 2026): the day after Trump threatened to join Saudi Arabia's war, the Houthis struck the kingdom's most symbolic target — and Riyadh's air-defense math is deteriorating.
- Aramco HQ struck. Overnight, Houthi missiles hit the headquarters of Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, damaging the top three floors including the offices of the CEO and other top executives1, two regional officials told AP; the Saudi energy ministry reported a "limited fire." No casualties. The Houthis had pre-announced they were targeting Dhahran with a ballistic missile.
- The barrage. The Saudi-led coalition intercepted two drones, four cruise missiles and one ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh, a ballistic missile at Dhahran and a cruise missile at Al-Kharj; falling debris in Riyadh injured at least five people and damaged 15 homes. The Houthis claimed Aramco facilities in Dhahran, Riyadh airport and a Riyadh refinery as their targets. Riyadh's King Khalid airport has been hit repeatedly over the past week — at least 18 killed, 300+ wounded — and Cirium counts 3,000+ flights canceled or not operating across Saudi airports in a week.
- Riyadh's counterstrikes. The coalition confirmed strikes on oil sites across western Yemen, including near Ras Isa port (two killed, per the Houthi-run health ministry) and in Sanaa. ICG's Ahmed Nagi: targeting fuel storage "marks a new phase... The Houthis are betting on pressure, while the Saudis are betting on time."
- The interceptor problem. AP: regional officials say Saudi Arabia, the world's top purchaser of US weapons, is "running low on interceptors"2 — with NATO's own Patriot stockpiles also drained by the Iran war (NATO's Air Defenses 'Beyond Critical' as Iran War Depletes US Patriot Interceptor Stockpile), the kingdom's plea for US support lands in a depleted market.
- The siege. The WFP can no longer reach 600,000 aid-dependent people in encircled Taiz; schools there closed for a month; the ICRC reports an "unprecedented surge" in front-line casualties, especially Marib and Taiz.
- The off-ramp. Houthi politburo member Mohamed al-Bukhaiti told AP that Oman is mediating and "Russia and China also tried via Iran": "We're welcoming any mediation that leads to an end of the war and the blockade between Sanaa and Riyadh... We're ready for a comprehensive end of the war and the blockade from both sides, not just a temporary ceasefire." Trump, meanwhile, is "evaluating whether the U.S. should join Saudi strikes against the Houthis" — the threat documented in the previous revision of this note.
What it signals: the Gulf war's second front is now a two-capital attrition fight — Riyadh and Sanaa trading strikes — with global energy stakes. Aramco's headquarters joining the target set is a psychological escalation designed to force mediation, and the mediators circling (Oman, then Russia and China via Iran) are themselves a map of the realignment this topic tracks.
