Diesel Sets Another Record ($6.52) While Gasoline Nears $4.50 — Pump Prices Ignore Oil's Five-Day Slide

Update (Tuesday, Sept 22, AAA daily): The retail energy squeeze on households set another milestone even as spot crude fell for a fifth straight session on UNGA diplomacy. Per NBC News: "The national average hit a new all-time high of $6.52 per gallon Tuesday, up 82% since the start of the year on a record run propelled in part by intensifying aerial attacks between Russia and Ukraine.1" That's another penny on top of Monday's $6.51 record and roughly 24 cents above the level of a week earlier — the record run continues despite the diplomacy dip in Brent/WTI.

Gasoline is now knocking on its own threshold: "So are retail gas prices, which reached $4.47 per gallon on Tuesday. That's 50% higher than it was when the Iran war began" — just three cents below the $4.50/gallon watch line. Both oil benchmarks are up more than 60% since the start of the year.

What it means: pump prices have decoupled from the day-to-day diplomacy trade2 — the pass-through of the summer's crude surge plus refinery-margin pressure (Russia–Ukraine strikes have cut global refining capacity) is still working through to retail, so household and logistics costs keep rising even as the oil premium cracks at the margin. The cost-of-living channel is now running at record intensity: diesel at $6.52 feeds directly into trucking, food and goods prices (see COLA Day: 3.6% for 2027 — Largest Since 2023 but Below the CPI-W's 3.9% — as Gas Logs a Record 158 Days Above $4 and the IEA Says Diesel Stays Tight "Well Into 2027" and ISM: Factories Still Expanding (54.5) but Prices-Paid Jumps to 77.9 — the War Premium and Tariffs Hit the Factory Gate), while the UNGA-day supply news — the Saudi east-west pipeline restart and reported Hormuz-reopening offer (Hormuz Watch (Oct 10): Iran Reviewing US Response to 7-Day Hormuz-Reopening Proposal — Trump: "Productive" Talks, No Attack Before Midterms — While Houthi Strikes Hit Saudi Aramco's Ras Tanura and Jeddah) — is the first credible path to relief, with effects that would only reach the pump with a lag.

  1. An instance of Diesel, not crude, is where an energy shock becomes unprintable. — Diesel keeps setting records even as spot crude falls five straight sessions, showing the unprintable squeeze lives in refined products rather than the crude barrel. ↩︎

  2. An instance of Pump prices now break at the refinery, not the crude barrel. — Retail diesel sets all-time records even as crude falls five straight sessions — the pump now breaks at refinery margins and pipeline logistics, not the crude barrel. ↩︎
