NFL Trade Market Heats Up: Chargers Weigh Fire Sale at 0-5; 5-0 49ers Hold League-Best $41.9M in Cap Space
The Nov. 10 trade deadline is less than a month out and the market has already moved four times since Oct. 11: Marvin Harrison Jr. to Houston (Marvin Harrison Jr. Traded from Cardinals to Texans — Reunites with C.J. Stroud in Houston), Cam Jurgens to Baltimore (Eagles' Crisis Compounds: Jalen Hurts Blood Clot; 24 Players Injured; Roseman Pivots to Full Seller), J.J. McCarthy to the Giants (Giants' Season Pivots: Jaxson Dart Out for Season, J.J. McCarthy Traded in From Minnesota), and Joey Porter Jr. to Dallas. Per CBS Sports' Carter Bahns: "The question is not whether there will be a flurry of moves at the deadline — that is a given. It is more about which teams will make them."
The buyer/seller map that's emerging:
- Seller: Chargers (0-5). "Shockingly, going nowhere fast at 0-5 and face a grueling schedule between now and Nov. 10, so they may as well get out ahead of the market." Khalil Mack (35, three sacks, one-year deal) is "by far the most tradeable player on the roster"; Donte Jackson, Quentin Johnston and David Njoku could also go.
- Buyer: Cowboys. Jerry Jones is "in a trading mood" after adding Porter and could chase Maxx Crosby — Dallas "reportedly made three offers to the Raiders" before the nixed deal that would have sent Crosby to Baltimore — or Pittsburgh's Alex Highsmith.
- Buyer: 49ers. They "own the best resume in the NFL with wins over the entire rest of the NFC West, plus the Broncos and Dolphins," and hold $41.9 million in cap space, the most of any team. With Ricky Pearsall out for the season and Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson and De'Zhaun Stribling ailing, Jerry Jeudy "might be there for the taking."
- Seller: Titans. Rebuild mode under Cam Ward: Tony Pollard "is among the biggest names across the NFL who could be next in line to be traded," with Calvin Ridley and Jermaine Johnson II also available.
- Seller: Buccaneers / Buyer: Lions. Tampa Bay (Chris Godwin the headliner) could sell if Todd Bowles' seat keeps heating up, and Detroit — $33.9M in cap space, both starting safeties hurt — is the natural cornerback buyer.
