Marvin Harrison Jr. Traded from Cardinals to Texans — Reunites with C.J. Stroud in Houston

What's new: The Arizona Cardinals traded 2024's No. 4 overall pick, wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., to the Houston Texans — a stunning early-season divorce for a player drafted on Hall of Fame heritage. Per NFL.com: "The Cardinals traded the third-year wide receiver and a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Texans in exchange for 2027 second-round and seventh-round selections, Arizona announced Monday." The deal was made official Oct. 12 after Harrison passed his physical, with the seventh-rounder originally belonging to the 49ers (per the Cardinals' team site).

Why Arizona gave up

Harrison's play had cratered. Per NFL.com: "His play, however, has cratered through four games to begin the 2026 season. Harrison has just five receptions on 13 targets for 85 yards and a TD this season and was subject to trade speculation the past few weeks." He finished his Cardinals career with 108 catches for 1,578 yards and 13 touchdowns in 33 games — well short of the billing for the son of the Hall of Famer. GM Monti Ossenfort's statement: "Decisions like this are never easy... Ultimately, we have to do what is best for our football team and that will always be the driving factor. We are extremely grateful to Marvin for what he has contributed to our organization and wish him the very best as he moves forward in his career."

Per CBS Sports research, Harrison is "the first wide receiver since Ahmad Rashad in 1974 to be traded within his first three NFL seasons after being selected in the top five of the NFL draft1" — and, like Rashad, he was traded by the Cardinals.

The Houston fit

Houston (0-4 to start, 1-4 after a 26-3 win over Tennessee) is trying to salvage a season that was supposed to be a Super Bowl run. Harrison reunites with his Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud — in 2022 with Stroud, Harrison set or tied career highs with 77 catches, 1,263 yards and 14 TDs. Stroud after the trade: "I think he's a great guy, think he's a great player, and I'm excited to get him here." Coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed the deal with a smile after the Titans win: "You guys want to know, huh? Yes, we traded for Marvin Harrison."

Harrison is expected to make his Texans debut in Sunday's Week 6 game against Jacksonville in London; Ryans declared during the week that the former first-round pick "will definitely see action against Jacksonville."

  1. An instance of First-round pedigree no longer buys a third season. — A top-five pick is off his original team before year three ends because cratering production no longer earns development patience. ↩︎
