Meta and Microsoft Quietly Pull Internal Work Off Claude — Weeks Before Anthropic's IPO
Per The Information (reported Oct 5–6, 2026), two of Anthropic's biggest enterprise customers are sharply cutting internal Claude usage even as they keep selling Anthropic-powered products:
- Microsoft: internal Claude spend had been projected at over $1 billion annually; it was cut by more than a third, with the monthly per-employee Claude budget in the cloud division dropping from $100,000 to about $10,000. Executives Scott Guthrie and Jay Parikh told employees to use in-house tools — GitHub Copilot and OpenAI's models — instead. (Customer-facing Copilot features still run on Anthropic models; this is an internal-usage pullback, not a severing of ties.)
- Meta: internal Claude Code users fell from roughly 60,000 earlier in 2026 to about 30,000 — partly layoffs, partly substitution by Meta's own MetaCode (30,000+ internal users) and Muse Code. Meta spent over $105 million on Claude Code in a single 28-day stretch before the pullback. Meta has also restricted employee use of Claude and OpenAI's Codex for AI-development work, citing "distillation" concerns — keeping rival models away from its training data.
The market-share backdrop sharpened the same week: per WSJ (Oct 7), on OpenRouter, business spending across OpenAI and Anthropic models was roughly even in September — versus Anthropic commanding a 75% share in January.
Why it matters: Anthropic heads to a November IPO priced partly on enterprise Claude demand (Anthropic's $2T Pitch: Q3 Revenue $16.8B (+45%), Investor Day Held Oct 14, Public Prospectus Due ~Oct 25 — Early Backer Predicts a $2.4T Pop), and its two marquee customers are substituting in-house tools for exactly the high-token coding workloads that drove Claude's growth. The countermove landed the same week — the steepest small-model price cut in Anthropic's history (Claude Haiku 5.5 Ships Minutes Before GPT-6's ChatGPT Debut: 75% Cheaper, Tiered Pricing, First Haiku With Effort Controls) plus Sonnet cache-read cuts, an explicit fight to keep the high-volume tier. The Decoder's frame is the strategic one: Anthropic is "transform[ing] from partner into competitor" for the giants it sells to — and tools like Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work "are increasingly turning into Office alternatives."
