India IT Q2 FY27 Earnings Season Opens: TCS Posts Weakest September Quarter in Three Years as AI Revenue Masks Legacy Contraction

The first India IT print of the season — TCS, October 8, 2026 — landed as a near-exact replica of the Accenture paradox from a week earlier (Accenture Q4 FY2026: The Bellwether's AI Paradox — Record Bookings and a 15.6% Relief Rally, but Explicit AI-Demand Risk, Price Cuts, and ~1% Organic Growth at the Low End): a profit beat and a relief rally on top of a core business that is visibly stalling under AI-led pricing pressure.

The numbers (TCS Q2 FY27, quarter ended Sept 30, 2026):

  • Revenue ₹73,188 crore, +1.3% QoQ / +11.2% YoY in rupees — but only +0.5% QoQ in constant currency, the weakest September quarter in three years (Reuters). USD revenue $7,642M, +2.4% YoY.
  • Net profit ₹13,884 crore, +15% YoY, beating the CNBC-TV18 poll (₹13,673 crore). Operating margin 24.0%.
  • Annualized AI revenue of $3.1 billion, up 20% sequentially from $2.6 billion — crossing 10% of total revenue for the first time (Moneycontrol).
  • TCV $9.6B (vs $9.5B last quarter, $10B a year ago). Workforce 598,056 (roughly flat YoY); attrition stable at 13.3%; 10,000 graduates onboarded in the quarter, with ~8,900 forward-deployed engineers planned for AI-focused sales/consulting. COO Aarthi Subramanian: "Targeting 25-30% faster execution using AI."

The cannibalization language is now explicit. CEO K Krithivasan on the analyst call: "Demand environment has not materially changed since last quarter and discretionary programmes without near-term value remain under scrutiny." And the sell-side read-through, from Ashis Dash, lead analyst at Systematix Group (via Reuters): "The AI revenue should be read in tandem with the accelerating decline in traditional revenues (which) points to AI-led pricing pressure and lower spending on services. We believe most large IT-services firms to face similar headwinds as legacy revenues contract." Kotak Institutional Equities separately flagged "ongoing pricing pressure" as a margin driver.

Market reaction: TCS shares jumped 5.46% on Oct 9 after a 35.7% YTD decline, leading a Nifty IT rally of 3%+ (TCS +5.47%, Wipro +3.20%, HCLTech +2.85%, Infosys +2.67%, Tech Mahindra +1.79% intraday) — despite the same-week news that the US Department of Labor suspended several IT firms (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Cognizant, plus Microsoft, Adobe and Capgemini per reports) from the PERM green-card labor certification program. Investors judged the PERM hit to near-term delivery as limited.

What's still coming this season: HCLTech reported after market close Oct 12 (guidance retained at 1–4% cc revenue growth per Financial Express live coverage), Wipro and Tech Mahindra on Oct 15, and Infosys — the biggest remaining print — on Oct 23. The sector context remains the 8-year-low mutual fund allocation documented in India IT Sector Faces 8-Year Low in Mutual Fund Allocation as AI Disruption Fears Spread.

What it means for someone evaluating the landscape: the IT-services displacement debate has converged on a single scoreboard — whether AI revenue growth (+20% QoQ at TCS) can outrun legacy revenue contraction and pricing deflation. TCS's answer this quarter was "not yet": AI is now >10% of revenue, but total constant-currency growth was ~zero. Watch whether Infosys (Oct 23) shows the same split.

Revision history

  • New finding: TCS Q2 FY27 print (Oct 8) fired the one_shot watch — weakest Sept-quarter CC growth in 3 years, AI revenue >10% of revenue, explicit AI-led pricing pressure commentary.
