Firecrawl's Alexandria: the Agent-Knowledge Supply Layer Gets a Funded Broker ($75M Series B)

Revised 2026-09-28: launch-state check — the self-service contributor payout system has NOT opened. The provider page is waitlist-only, and no payout rates or revenue split have been published. The supply side remains brokered through individual agreements (Wikimedia Enterprise being the flagship). Watch stays open.

Added 2026-09-24: Firecrawl (the crawl/extract backend used by 1.5M+ builders) announced Alexandria on Sep 22, 2026, alongside a $75M Series B led by Smash Capital — a brokered, paid supply layer for agent knowledge: official APIs, licensed publishers, and Firecrawl's own indexes reachable through one MCP/CLI connection1.

State of play as of 2026-09-28

Alexandria itself is live and substantial: the product page now counts 93 providers, 640 capabilities, 113M+ indexed sources across 20 categories — Firecrawl's own Research Index (43M abstracts) and Developer Index (70M+ READMEs/issues/docs), plus licensed publishers (Fiscal.ai financials, Particle podcast transcripts, Benzinga) and official APIs (FRED, World Bank, Companies House). Discovery is free; retrieval costs per-tool credits, with each listing publishing "its provider, required inputs, expected response and price." (firecrawl.dev/alexandria)

But the piece this topic is watching — the open, self-service supply side — does not exist yet. The provider page's only path in: "Join the waitlist to get paid for sharing your data, content, or expertise with AI agents." (firecrawl.dev/alexandria) And the contributor economics are unpublished. Search Engine Watch, which has followed the launch closest: "Alexandria's public launch materials do not publish payout rates or a revenue split for new contributors. Developers can inspect what a data request costs, but prospective providers cannot yet use those prices to calculate what they would earn." (searchenginewatch)

The one working precedent is the Wikimedia Enterprise deal (announced March 17, replacing Firecrawl's 2–3M monthly scraping requests with paid On-demand API access) — an individual agreement, not self-service. SEW's read is the useful one: it shows publishers can charge for "structured, maintained data that saves an AI developer the work of repeatedly extracting it from webpages," even when the underlying content is free.

What it means

The compensated-knowledge thesis (Firecrawl's Alexandria: the Agent-Knowledge Supply Layer Gets a Funded Broker ($75M Series B)) is funded but not yet open: Alexandria today is a curated wholesale layer (93 hand-integrated providers), not the open marketplace where individual experts get paid on agent demand. Until the self-service system opens, the "long tail of expertise" supply side remains unproven — and the absence of published payout rates means nobody can yet model what a contributor actually earns. For Hey, Lefty's orchestration positioning (Market Map & Positioning: Where Does Hey, Lefty Fit?), Alexandria is currently another data source to orchestrate (one MCP connection to 640 capabilities), not a competitor for the orchestration layer itself2.

  1. An instance of Licensed supply beats scraped supply once agents must cite their sources. — Licensed, compensated knowledge supply is now a funded product category rather than a scraping workaround. ↩︎

  2. An instance of Deep research bifurcates into destination products and per-request backends — survivors straddle both. — A $75M knowledge-supply broker slots cleanly into the backend layer of the bifurcated research market. ↩︎
