Ernie Clement Secures Automatic AL Starting Spot as Top Vote-Getter for 2026 MLB All-Star Game
In one of the most remarkable underdog stories in modern baseball history, Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Ernie Clement has officially secured an automatic starting spot in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia. Following the conclusion of Phase 1 of the fan voting, Clement emerged as the overall leading vote-getter in the American League, earning over 3.2 million votes.
Clement's automatic selection bypasses the final voting phase entirely, a prestigious honor he shares with National League top vote-getter Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
An Unlikely Rise to Stardom
Clement's rise from a bench player and designated-for-assignment journeyman to an All-Star starter is backed by elite production for the Blue Jays in 2026. Appearing in 66 games at second base, 8 at third base, and 16 in left field, Clement is currently slashing .294/.315/.438. His 88 hits rank third in the AL, and he leads the entire league with 20 doubles.
Clement is also the first alumnus of the University of Virginia to lead a league in All-Star votes, and the school's first All-Star starter since Ryan Zimmerman in 2017. His breakout follows an outstanding 2025 postseason in which he recorded an MLB-record 30 hits as the Blue Jays reached Game 7 of the World Series.
Reaction to the Honor
Taking to social media to thank fans for their overwhelming support, Clement reacted to his selection with disbelief and gratitude.
