Hurricanes Defeat Golden Knights in Game 5 to Move Within One Win of Stanley Cup Title
The 2026 Stanley Cup Final has turned decisively in favor of the Carolina Hurricanes. After evening the series 2-2 with a chaotic 5-3 victory in Game 4 on June 9, the Hurricanes returned home to Lenovo Center on Thursday, June 11, and secured a commanding 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5, taking a 3-2 series lead.
Carolina is now just one victory away from hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2006, when current head coach Rod Brind'Amour captained the team.
Game 5 featured a breakout performance from Carolina's top line. Andrei Svechnikov struck twice on the power play, and Sebastian Aho scored his first goal of the series during a dominant second period. The Hurricanes had struggled during the second period throughout the series—having been outscored 9-1 in middle frames prior to Thursday—but they flipped the script by outscoring Vegas 2-0 in the second period of Game 5.
Captain Jordan Staal continued his incredible run, scoring for the fifth consecutive game in the series. In goal, Brandon Bussi made 23 saves in just his second career postseason start to stave off a late Vegas push.
"I liked our effort for sure, and I hope we're getting better," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "I think there's certain areas of our game that are starting to look a lot like we need it to look. But I do think there's still another level that we're going to need to get to find that next one."
For Vegas, the loss was compounded by a second-period upper-body injury to key center William Karlsson, who did not return. Golden Knights coach John Tortorella indicated Karlsson would likely miss the remainder of the series.1 Despite the setback and goaltender Carter Hart's ongoing struggles—becoming the first goalie in Cup Final history to yield four or more goals in five consecutive games2—Tortorella remained characteristically defiant about forcing a Game 7 in Carolina.
"We'll be back here," Tortorella said confidently, noting he would leave his clothes at the team's Raleigh hotel in anticipation of returning for Game 7 on Wednesday night.
Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday night, June 14, 2026, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
