New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger took home the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award. In the top of the first inning, with the bases loaded and two outs against Philadelphia Phillies starting ace Cristopher Sánchez, Bellinger fought off a 2-2 count to deliver a clutch, sharp ground-ball single to center field. The hit drove in two runs, providing the AL with a lead they would hold for the rest of the night.
AL Pitching Suffocates the NL Lineup
The AL pitching staff delivered a masterclass, combining to hold a potent NL lineup to just three hits and two walks. Led by Toronto Blue Jays ace Dylan Cease, who struck out three batters in his single inning of work, the AL arms allowed the fewest hits to a single team in an All-Star Game since 1990. The only hits allowed came off Minnesota Twins' Joe Ryan, Toronto's Bowden Francis, and Tampa Bay's Bryan Baker.
Junior Caminero Injury Scare
Tampa Bay Rays slugger and AL MVP candidate Junior Caminero provided the game's biggest scare when he was struck on the outside of his left hand by a 98 mph sinker from St. Louis Cardinals closer Riley O'Brien. Caminero exited the game in visible pain, but post-game X-rays returned clean and negative for fractures. Chicago White Sox breakout infielder Miguel Vargas replaced him as a pinch-runner and later sealed the AL's 4-0 victory with a 433-foot solo home run in the eighth inning.
