Austin Reaves Re-Signs with Lakers on Historic $185 Million Max Contract

The Los Angeles Lakers have locked down their homegrown star guard, Austin Reaves, agreeing to a historic four-year, $185 million maximum contract. The deal includes a player option for the final season in 2029-30 and represents the richest contract in NBA history for an undrafted player.

To pave the way for the maximum extension, the 28-year-old Reaves declined his $14.9 million player option. He will earn $41.3 million in the first year of the new agreement. Because the Lakers hold his Bird rights, the agreement will be signed last—after the Lakers exhaust their cap room—meaning the deal has no negative impact on the team's cap flexibility this summer.1

Reaves was highly sought after, with several teams including the Detroit Pistons prepared to offer maximum-level sheets. Reaves averaged a career-high 23.3 points on 49% shooting, with 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds last season, despite being limited to 51 games due to calf and oblique injuries.2 Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka emphasized that retaining Reaves was the team's absolute priority:

"He started his journey here as a Laker and has made it very clear to us that he wants his journey to continue as a Laker," Pelinka said. "We want his odyssey to continue to unfold in the Purple and Gold."
