Space Safety: Persistent Air Leaks Trigger Brief ISS Emergency Shelter Order inside SpaceX Dragon
A high-stakes orbital standoff on the International Space Station (ISS) has culminated in a landmark bilateral agreement between NASA and Roscosmos to permanently decommission the leaky PrK transfer tunnel of the Russian Zvezda service module. The agreement, reached in mid-June 2026, successfully retires a years-long source of catastrophic risk that had plagued the aging station since 2019.
The resolution followed a dramatic incident on June 5, 2026, when NASA took the extreme step of directing its astronauts to seek emergency shelter inside the SpaceX Crew Dragon Freedom spacecraft. The "safe haven" evacuation protocol was triggered after Russian cosmonauts unilaterally attempted a highly risky structural repair on the PrK module, which has suffered from progressive cracking and corrosion.
Specifically, Roscosmos officials planned to address new structural cracks (bringing the total to approximately 16) using a drill and a "drill stop" device, followed by a saw to remove a load-bearing bracket. Because Roscosmos had failed to provide NASA with an engineering or safety analysis to prove the procedure would not trigger a rapid, explosive depressurization—or "unzipping"—of the module, NASA officials strongly objected. When cosmonauts approached the wall with a saw while ignoring ground communications, NASA ordered the crew into the Crew Dragon. The dramatic safe haven action finally forced Roscosmos to halt the work and enter negotiations.
Under the new decommissioning agreement, Russian cosmonauts will no longer enter or pressurize the PrK module. Although Progress cargo vehicles can still dock at the port to transfer liquids and fuel, the transfer tunnel will remain permanently sealed, preventing human access and eliminating the risk of a catastrophic structural failure of the module in orbit.
