H5N1 Bird Flu Jumps to Local Australian Wildlife with First Native Seabird Case
On July 10, 2026, the Australian government confirmed the first case of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in local, resident wildlife, marking a critical escalation of the biosecurity threat on the continent.12 A native Greater Crested Tern—a common, non-migratory coastal bird—was found dead at Robe Marina on South Australia's Limestone Coast and tested positive for the virus.
Prior to this detection, H5N1 in Australia had only been confirmed in pelagic migratory seabirds (such as giant petrels) that had likely contracted the virus in the subantarctic and landed sick on Australian beaches. The infection of a resident coastal bird indicates that the virus has begun active, local transmission on the Australian mainland. Greater Crested Terns live in large, mixed coastal flocks, raising fears of rapid, uncontrolled spread to other vulnerable native bird species, such as the eastern hooded plover.
