Domestic Cyclospora Outbreak Surges Past 4,000 Cases as Investigation Focuses on Taco Bell and Contaminated Lettuce

The summer 2026 outbreak of the foodborne parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis has escalated into a major public health emergency, with national cases surging past 4,000. Michigan is at the epicenter of the crisis, reporting 3,309 cases and 44 hospitalizations as of July 14, 2026—an extraordinary spike compared to the state's typical baseline of approximately 50 cases per year. Other heavily hit states include New York (470 cases), Ohio (397 cases), and North Carolina (at least 240 cases), with illnesses reported in at least 31 states.

Federal and state health officials have narrowed their investigation to leafy greens and lettuce as the primary suspected vehicles. Crucially, investigators are now focusing on whether Taco Bell restaurants played a central role in distributing the contaminated produce.

In response, numerous Taco Bell locations across the Midwest have abruptly stopped serving fresh produce. Paper signs posted at drive-thrus and cash registers state that the restaurants are "currently unable to sell Lettuce, Cilantro, Onion, Pico de Gallo, and Guacamole due to a nationwide recall." No official nationwide recall has been formally announced by the FDA or CDC, suggesting the restaurant chain is taking preemptive, voluntary measures. Epidemiology remains highly challenging because the parasite's long incubation period (up to two weeks) and intricate distributor networks make direct traceback difficult.
