SpaceXAI Powers Down 11 Southaven Turbines and Agrees to Fixed Removal Timeline Amid Class Action Noise Lawsuit
Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) is executing a rapid operational transition at its massive Colossus supercomputing cluster on the Tennessee-Mississippi border, announcing on August 31, 2026, that it has powered down 11 of the 69 temporary, mobile gas turbines at its Southaven, Mississippi facility.
The move represents the first phase of an environmental and community compromise as SpaceXAI races to replace its temporary generation stack with a permanent, fully permitted power plant amid mounting legal and regulatory pressure.
The MDEQ Agreed Order and Permanent Power Transition
To resolve regulatory friction, SpaceXAI entered into a formal agreed order with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) in July 2026. This order establishes a strict, legally binding timeline to decommission and remove all 69 temporary, mobile turbines by July 2027.
To replace the temporary turbines, SpaceXAI is constructing a massive 1.2 GW permanent power plant at the Southaven site. The new facility will consist of 41 permanent turbines operating under a federal Clean Air Act permit granted to SpaceXAI in March 2026.
“SpaceXAI remains committed to being a responsible neighbor and we’ll continue to rapidly remove the temporary, mobile turbines over the next year as our new 1.2 GW power plant comes online under the Clean Air Act permit,” the company stated on August 31.
Class Action Lawsuit and Noise Mitigation Efforts
The turbine shutdown follows intense local backlash over noise pollution.1 Residents Jason Haley, Preston Herrington, and Taylor Logsdon filed a class action lawsuit against SpaceXAI in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi, claiming the deafening, continuous roar from the 69 mobile turbines has severely disrupted their daily lives.
In response to the community outcry and the litigation, SpaceXAI has implemented several costly mitigation measures:
- Acoustic Barriers: The company has invested "millions of dollars" in sound walls, silencers, and next-generation turbines equipped with advanced quieting technologies.
- Emission Control: To address air quality concerns, SpaceXAI has retrofitted its remaining mobile turbines with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) devices, which safely convert nitrous oxides into harmless nitrogen and water. The company claims current monitoring shows local air quality continues to meet or exceed EPA standards.
The Colossus supercomputer site is a critical piece of SpaceXAI's model training pipeline, designed to support up to 1 million GPUs to power its flagship Grok models and driving its newly launched Grok Bot agentic coding tools.
