Moonshot AI Launches $50 Billion Pre-IPO Funding Round and Plans Hong Kong Listing Triggered by Kimi K3 Success
Beijing-based AI unicorn Moonshot AI has accelerated its transition toward the public markets, positioning itself for a major Hong Kong stock listing following the commercial success of its flagship Kimi K3 model.
Pre-IPO Round Targets August 27 Closing at $50B Valuation
According to reports from IPO Zaozhidao, Moonshot AI has notified investors participating in its pre-IPO funding round that the transaction will reach its final closing on August 27, 2026. The private round is being executed at a pre-money valuation of approximately USD 50 billion.
This pre-IPO round follows a massive Series F round in July 2026, which raised $3.5 billion and pushed the company's valuation to the $35–50 billion range. The influx of capital is designed to secure the massive computing resources required to train and serve Moonshot's increasingly large models.
September 30 Filing Target for Hong Kong IPO
To clear the path for a public listing, Moonshot AI has undertaken significant corporate restructuring:
- On July 29, 2026, Moonshot AI's onshore entity completed its conversion into a joint stock limited company, standardizing its corporate governance structure.
- In May 2026, the company notified shareholders that it had begun restructuring its Variable Interest Entity (VIE) and red-chip structures to remove regulatory obstacles to an offshore listing.
- The company is targeting September 30, 2026, to submit its official listing application to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), with a public listing anticipated between the end of 2026 and the second quarter of 2027. Financial institutions advising on the transaction view Q1 2027 as the optimal IPO window.
Kimi K3 as the Commercial Catalyst
The primary driver behind Moonshot's soaring valuation is the technical and commercial performance of Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model released on July 16, 2026. Kimi K3 demonstrated substantial pricing power:
- Moonshot priced Kimi K3's API output at USD 15 per million tokens, nearly four times the USD 4 charged for its previous K2.6 model.
- Despite the steep price increase, consumer subscriptions sold out within 48 hours of launch, forcing the company to temporarily limit new subscriptions to prevent its compute clusters from being overwhelmed.
- Following the launch, company president Zhang Yutong reported that enterprise annual recurring revenue (ARR) had grown "severalfold," providing a powerful growth narrative for the upcoming IPO.
However, Moonshot faces intense competition from rivals like DeepSeek, whose V4 Pro model was released on August 12, 2026. While V4 Pro scores slightly lower on overall performance, its per-task cost is less than 10% of Kimi K3's, presenting a continuous price-performance challenge.
