A prominent group of former researchers from Anthropic, Google, and xAI have launched a new frontier AI laboratory, Mirendil, with one of the largest seed financings in tech history. The San Francisco-based startup has secured $200 million in seed funding at a $1 billion valuation. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Kleiner Perkins, with participation from Nvidia Ventures.

Mirendil was founded by former Anthropic researchers Behnam Neyshabur and Harsh Mehta, who departed the company to pursue a highly specialized mission: building autonomous AI systems that can automate the AI engineering and scientific research process itself.1 Rather than focusing on general-purpose chatbots, Mirendil is training specialized foundation models on core AI research tasks, including:

  • Experimental design and hypothesis generation.
  • Automated hyperparameter search and optimization.
  • Model training, evaluation, and recursive self-improvement.

The startup's ultimate goal is to build an autonomous platform that allows scientists and domain experts to develop and deploy their own custom AI models without needing a dedicated team of machine learning engineers. Mirendil plans to release its first model and product preview in the coming months to gather feedback from the scientific and developer communities.
