Meta Suspends Controversial Instagram AI Tool After Widespread Privacy Backlash
Less than a week after its global rollout, Meta Platforms has abruptly discontinued a controversial artificial intelligence feature on Instagram. The tool, part of the newly launched Muse Image generator, allowed users to manipulate and remix photos from public Instagram accounts without the original creators' knowledge or consent, triggering immediate backlash over privacy and deepfake concerns.
The "Muse Image" Remixing Feature
On July 7, 2026, Meta Superintelligence Labs publicly unveiled Muse Image (internally code-named Mango), its first in-house media-generation model. Among its flagship features was a tool that let users generate altered images by @-mentioning public Instagram profiles.
The feature was designed to automatically enroll all public Instagram accounts and lacked any mechanism to alert users when their photos were being referenced or altered. Within days, privacy advocates and cybersecurity experts warned that the tool could be trivially abused to generate deepfakes, non-consensual altered likenesses, and targeted harassment campaigns.1
The immediate backlash reached a boiling point as talent agencies, including Creative Artists Agency (CAA), and the actors' union SAG-AFTRA issued public warnings and called on their members to opt out of Meta's AI training and generation pools.
Meta's Retraction and Admission
Faced with mounting scrutiny, Meta officially suspended the feature on July 10, 2026. In an update to its corporate blog, the company acknowledged that the feature had "missed the mark."
As reported by TechCrunch on July 10, 2026:
“Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way,” the company posted on its blog. “We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.”
The rapid retraction highlights the deep, ongoing friction between social media giants attempting to monetize user data for generative AI and the growing public and regulatory demand for strict data privacy and explicit user consent.
