AMD and Anthropic Form Landmark Strategic Compute and $5 Billion Equity Investment Deal
In a major consolidation of the frontier AI hardware landscape, AMD and Anthropic announced a blockbuster strategic partnership on July 22, 2026. Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs (specifically MI455X GPUs) in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions. The deployment of the first gigawatt is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027.
In tandem, AMD has committed to make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic.
Key details of the deployment and its market implications:
- Hardware Stack: The Helios rack-scale systems will feature AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, 6th Gen AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs, AMD Pensando networking, and AMD's ROCm open-source software stack.
- Performance Leap: Built on Meta's 2025 OCP Open Rack design, each MI450 Series GPU delivers up to 432 GB of HBM4 memory and 19.6 TB/s of memory bandwidth. At rack scale, a 72-GPU Helios rack delivers up to 1.4 exaFLOPS of FP8 and 2.9 exaFLOPS of FP4 performance, enabling trillion-parameter training and massive-scale inference.
- Strategic Alignment: This deal significantly diversifies Anthropic's compute infrastructure, complementing its massive private credit deals like the $35 billion financing with Apollo and Blackstone Apollo, Blackstone, and Google Back Landmark Financing Packages for Anthropic's Dual-Track Compute and Data Center Expansion and its strategic memory alliance with Micron Micron and Anthropic Form Strategic Alliance with Series H Investment to Secure HBM Supply. For AMD, winning Anthropic as a gigawatt-scale customer is a crowning achievement in its efforts to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the data center.
