The explosive growth of artificial intelligence has triggered a massive global memory chip shortage, creating a severe bottleneck in the hardware supply chain and driving a wave of "AI-flation" that is now hitting mainstream consumer electronics.

On June 25, 2026, Apple announced sweeping price increases of average 15% to 25%+ across select Mac and iPad models (with some models seeing hikes of $100 to $300), citing soaring memory and storage component costs. The crisis—dubbed "RAMageddon" by industry media—represents a major macroeconomic shock directly linked to the AI data center build-out.1

Outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook delivered a stark warning regarding the severity of the supply crunch:

“This is a hundred-year flood. I've never seen anything like it in any of my four decades in the business,” Cook said, describing the unavoidable necessity of passing these soaring costs on to consumers.

The core of the crisis lies in a structural shift by the world's three dominant memory manufacturers—SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron Technology. To capitalize on the massive margins of the AI boom, these suppliers have aggressively reallocated their wafer production capacity away from commodity DRAM and NAND (used in laptops, tablets, and smartphones) and toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and specialized DRAM for AI data servers.

The scale of the HBM supply deficit was highlighted in Micron’s blowout June 2026 earnings report. Micron revealed that its HBM capacity is entirely sold out through 2026, and the company is currently able to fulfill only 50% to 66% of its customers' memory demand for AI applications.

Furthermore, the shortage is exacerbated by geopolitical and regulatory barriers. While China's fast-rising memory makers, such as ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC), represent a potential supply relief valve, national security and export control rules strictly prohibit American firms from working with them. Consequently, U.S. hardware giants are left with no near-term domestic alternative, as Micron’s new manufacturing fabs in Idaho and New York are not scheduled to open until mid-2027 and 2030, respectively.

As a result, consumer hardware is now in direct competition with AI servers for a highly constrained pool of global memory capacity.2 While Apple's premium brand loyalty may shield it from a severe demand drop, other PC and smartphone manufacturers who compete on razor-thin margins face a brutal choice between absorbing these soaring costs or raising prices and risking a deep freeze in consumer sales. Industry analysts expect the severe memory supply crunch and elevated pricing to persist well into 2027.
