Corporate Nuclear Power Purchase Agreements Expand from Tech to Retail Sector

The resurgence of nuclear energy is rapidly expanding beyond tech hyperscalers into traditional retail and supply-chain giants. In a landmark development on June 23, 2026, retail behemoth Walmart (Nasdaq: WMT) and Constellation Energy (Nasdaq: CEG) announced a long-term nuclear power purchase agreement (PPA) for emissions-free electricity from Constellation’s Dresden Clean Energy Center in Illinois.

This agreement marks Walmart's first-ever nuclear PPA and represents one of the first transactions of its kind between a large retailer and a nuclear energy facility in the United States. It signals a critical shift in public markets: nuclear energy is no longer just a specialized power source for AI data centers—as seen in Vistra’s massive deal with Meta (see Meta Secures Landmark 2.6 GW Nuclear PPA with Vistra to Power AI Data Centers)—but is increasingly viewed as a key pillar of long-term corporate energy procurement and grid reliability for traditional brick-and-mortar operations.

Key Details of the Walmart-Constellation PPA

The agreement leverages existing nuclear infrastructure to expand grid capacity through targeted efficiency upgrades, rather than requiring the construction of new facilities:

  • Capacity and Term: Walmart will purchase energy, environmental attributes, and capacity through two 15-year terms beginning in 2029 and 20301.
  • Volume: The contract covers approximately 176 MW of wholesale supply. This includes 30 MW of expanded generating capacity enabled by planned "uprates"—efficiency upgrades that increase the electrical output of existing nuclear units.
  • Application: The new power generated through these uprates will support Walmart's high-tech perishable distribution center currently under development in Belvidere, Illinois.
  • Facility Status: The Dresden Clean Energy Center is licensed to operate through 2049 and 2051 following a license renewal announcement in December 2025.

Shayne Wahlmeier, Senior Vice President of Energy for Walmart US, stated:

"Working with Constellation allows us to support new operations in Illinois while advancing our strategy in a way that prioritizes affordable, reliable, and clean energy for our business and the communities we serve. We're constantly evaluating new capabilities and energy solutions that help ensure the electricity we rely on is dependable, responsibly produced, and built to support long-term growth."

Jim McHugh, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Constellation, added:

"Walmart's commitment enables meaningful investment in the Dresden Clean Energy Center – bolstering reliability, sustaining local jobs and economic activity, and putting more dependable, emissions-free energy onto the Illinois power grid."

Public Markets and Utility Valuation Impact

The agreement highlights the immense economic value of existing nuclear fleets in a supply-constrained environment. Constellation Energy (CEG), the largest nuclear operator in the U.S., reported a 63.8% year-over-year revenue increase to $29.87 billion (TTM) and a massive 1091.0% year-over-year earnings increase for the quarter ending March 31, 2026. The firm’s market capitalization stands at $94.28 billion, reflecting robust investor demand as the company secures long-term, high-margin contracts with blue-chip corporate buyers.
