NotebookLM Is Now "Gemini Notebook": Google's Source-Grounded Notebook Layer, Rebranded and Enterprise-Priced
Google has folded NotebookLM into its Gemini brand — it is "Gemini Notebook" as of July 2026 — and is positioning it as the source-grounded workspace layer of the Google AI subscription stack, with a new enterprise SKU sold through Google Cloud. This fills in the bottom-to-mid band of the research-tool price curve in Research-Tool Market Segmentation & Price Points, Mid-2026 — and the Verified Capability Limits and extends the free-incumbent squeeze (see Scholar Labs: Google Scholar's Conservative "Deep Search" Entry — and the Academic AI Quadrant Map) from retrieval into the notebook/workspace layer.
The rebrand is explicit, and so is the ambition. From the product's own plans-page FAQ (notebooklm.google/plans, fetched 2026-09-19):
"Yes. NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook as of July 2026. It is the same product you know and love, and all of your existing notebooks remain fully accessible. … We're continuing to expand notebooks beyond a standalone app into an integrated workspace that brings your context across our AI products."
Core value prop — grounding. Google's own differentiation claim: "As a research assistant, Gemini Notebook's advantage is being source-grounded. This helps deliver more accurate answers and insights based on your actual material — reducing the likelihood of AI errors and hallucinations." The research workflow now bundles Source Discovery and Deep Research directly in the notebook ("Upload your research documents, or find new information through Source Discovery or Deep Research right in Gemini Notebook"), alongside Audio/Video Overviews, Slide generation, Flashcards, Reports, and public notebook sharing (consumer accounts only).
Tier structure. The plans page scales by sources-per-notebook — 50 (free) / 100 (AI Plus) / 300 (AI Pro) / 600 (AI Ultra) — with usage limits framed as 2x / 4x / "5-20X higher" than standard. Third-party pricing detail (FelloAI, NotebookLM Pricing 2026): the tiers ride Google AI subscriptions — Plus $4.99/mo, Pro $19.99/mo, Ultra $99.99 or $199.99/mo — and NotebookLM "cannot be bought as a standalone product at any price." The free tier is generous: 100 notebooks, 50 sources each, 50 chats/day, and 10 Deep Research sessions/month. The enterprise band:
"NotebookLM Enterprise is sold separately through Google Cloud. Pricing starts at roughly $9 per license per month with a 15-license minimum … the only path that adds enterprise security controls like VPC Service Controls, IAM access management and audit logging." — FelloAI
On the plans page, Google makes the enterprise privacy promise directly: "We value your privacy and never use your organization's data to train Gemini Notebook."
What this means for the Hey, Lefty map
- The "source-grounded notebook" value prop is now commoditized at the bottom of the market. Google gives away grounding, Deep Research, and generated artifacts (audio/video/slides) inside a $0–$20/mo subscription band. Any positioning that reduces to "chat with your sources, get cited answers" is now Google's home turf.
- The $9/license enterprise SKU is the price anchor to beat. With VPC-SC, IAM, and audit logging at roughly $9/seat, a startup workspace selling "secure, auditable research" at $30–50/seat needs capability Google doesn't ship — multi-source orchestration, cross-vendor MCP, evidence standards, workflow automation — not parity features (consistent with the differentiation logic in Destination vs. Backend: The Research-Tool Market Bifurcates — and Both Layers Converge on MCP).
- Workspace convergence from above is real but partial. Gemini Notebook is a persistent multi-artifact research surface (notebooks, sources, Deep Research, artifacts) — but it is a separate product from the Gemini chat app, not a chat-host-native workspace. The watch on OpenAI/Anthropic/Google shipping a native chat-adjacent research workspace remains untriggered.
