AcuityMD's Research Agent: the MedTech Data-Owner Play — Proprietary Ontology as Moat, Agent as Interface

On October 13, 2026, AcuityMD (Boston; self-described as "the AI platform for MedTech trusted by over 500 MedTech companies – including 16 of the top 20," naming Becton Dickinson, Olympus, and Teleflex) launched advanced market analysis in AcuityAI, "powered by a new research agent that delivers company, brand, and product-level market share, pricing comparisons, and patient pathway analyses to calculate total addressable market size in minutes" (BusinessWire press release, fetched this cycle).

The moat is the data, not the model. "It is grounded in the company's proprietary MedTech ontology that connects physicians, facilities, networks, procedures, and reimbursement. The agent runs multi-step analyses scoped to a company's market, cited at every step, and re-runnable as new data arrives, giving leaders a defensible starting point for planning, investment, and mergers and acquisitions.1"

The release explicitly disclaims the horizontal layer. "MedTech market analysis typically requires piecing together information across claims data, syndicated reports, clinical research, internal data, and more, which customers say takes weeks or even months. And while general-purpose AI has made research faster, it lacks the right data and industry context required for high-stakes decisions.2"

CPO Brian Collins: "MedTech teams now have a faster path from a market question to a decision, directly within AcuityAI. Research that used to take weeks or even months can now be completed in minutes." Buy-side pull is quoted too: "AcuityAI brings objective data into our diligence process, proving particularly valuable in our understanding of markets and how they're evolving over time" — Chris Murray, Principal, MVM Partners (healthcare-focused investment firm).

Rollout shape: the agent "can be enabled for select users" — no self-serve tier and no published pricing (enterprise sales motion). AcuityMD is demoing it at its own Flywheel 2026 conference (Oct 13–14, Philadelphia) and at The MedTech Conference (Oct 18–21, Boston).

What it means for the market map

The vertical layer's data-owner playbook now extends to MedTech commercial analytics — the same pattern as legal (Thomson Reuters CoCounsel Legal: The Legal Vertical's Data-Owner Incumbent Goes Fully Agentic — and Now Rides All Three Agent Platforms), clinical publishing (Elsevier's ClinicalKey AI: The Publisher-Incumbent's Full-Stack Vertical Play — JAMA Full Text, EHR Integration, a Deep Research Assistant), finance (Kimi for Financial Services: Moonshot Sells Vertical Research at $7–$104/Month, Wired via MCP to S&P Global and Wind, Institutional MCP Financial Data Servers: FactSet, S&P Global, and PitchBook Unbundle), and synthetic-respondent market research (Synthetic-Respondent Research Agents: Electric Twin Turns Market Research Into a Single-Prompt Autonomous Project): a proprietary corpus/ontology is the moat, the agent is the interface, distribution is the existing installed base, and general-purpose tools are explicitly disclaimed for high-stakes work. For Market Map & Positioning: Where Does Hey, Lefty Fit?: horizontal general-purpose research agents are structurally excluded from these verticals (they lack the corpus), which both protects the verticals' pricing power and confirms that a horizontal orchestrator's differentiation must come from breadth, method transparency, and user-side data — not from any proprietary index. Also note the audit-grade framing ("cited at every step," "defensible starting point" for M&A diligence) — the same "show your work" value prop tracked in The Audit-Grade Vertical: Research Agents That Sell "Show Your Work" — Lumivero, Menos AI, HITZ.

  1. An instance of Verifiable provenance becomes the product once generation is cheap. — In a diligence-grade vertical, the cited, re-runnable chain of evidence — not generation speed — is what the product sells. ↩︎

  2. An instance of Proprietary unstructured data and pooled multi-tenant edge cases shield SaaS platforms from foundation model displacement. — The moat is the proprietary MedTech ontology rather than the model — exactly the proprietary-data shield that general-purpose AI cannot displace. ↩︎
