Southeast Asia's Stablecoin Payment Corridors: SBI Backs dtcpay's US$25M Series A to Build Regulated Japan–SEA Rails

Singapore-based stablecoin payments firm dtcpay completed its Series A at US$25 million, bringing Japan's SBI Group in as a strategic investor (via SBI Ventures Asset Pte Ltd and the SBI-NTU-Kyobo Digital Innovation Fund), alongside earlier lead Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India, Genedant Capital, and longtime backer Kwee Liong Tek (announced ~Sept 18, 2026).

The licence stack is the moat. dtcpay holds a Major Payment Institution licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore and an Electronic Money Institution licence in Luxembourg, with additional authorizations in Hong Kong, Australia, the US and Canada — "institutions can use digital-asset rails without leaving a regulated framework." Products already in market: point-of-sale stablecoin acceptance connected to WalletConnect (hundreds of consumer wallets), and a Visa partnership letting customers spend stablecoins as fiat "at more than 150 million merchant locations." Real-world pilots include Metro — an early Singapore department store to accept stablecoin payments — and Capella Singapore.

Strategic, not just financial, capital. SBI Ven Capital CEO Eiichiro So said dtcpay's "licensing-first model, product breadth, and user experience stood out," and that the investment "begins a partnership to strengthen a regulated digital asset corridor between Japan and Southeast Asia." The new capital funds product expansion, a larger merchant network through the rest of 2026, deeper bank ties, and entry into more regulated markets.

What it means for a US expansion strategy: strategic corporate money (Japanese, Temasek-linked) is now building regulated stablecoin corridors into Southeast Asia, and the entry template is a multi-jurisdiction licence stack rather than a crypto-first pitch1. This complements US issuers already building SEA payout infrastructure from Singapore — see Circle's Singapore Hub and Stablecoin Payouts Infrastructure: Accelerating Institutional Adoption in Southeast Asia (2026) — and signals that cross-border B2B payments (Japan–SEA first) is where stablecoin rails are reaching production-grade commerce in the region.
