The Oral GLP-1 Market War: Eli Lilly's Foundayo Launches in the UK to Challenge Novo Nordisk's Wegovy Pill
The battle for dominance in the next-generation oral GLP-1 market has reached a major commercial milestone. On August 24, 2026, Eli Lilly officially launched its daily weight-loss and diabetes pill, Foundayo (orforglipron), in the United Kingdom. This launch makes the UK the first country in Europe where the oral treatment is available, following its authorization by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on August 10, 2026.
The UK launch follows Foundayo's initial global milestone on April 1, 2026, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one comorbidity.
A Direct Challenge to Novo Nordisk
Foundayo represents a direct competitive challenge to Novo Nordisk's oral Wegovy (semaglutide) tablet, which was approved by the MHRA and launched in the UK in June 2026. Until now, Novo Nordisk held a first-mover advantage in the oral weight-loss space. However, Foundayo possesses several key clinical and logistical differentiators that could shift market share:
- No Food or Water Restrictions: Unlike Novo's Wegovy pill, which must be taken on an empty stomach with strict water limits and a waiting period before eating, Foundayo is a once-daily tablet that can be taken at any time of day with no food or water restrictions.1
- Pricing Advantages: Eli Lilly has positioned Foundayo as a highly competitive option. In the UK, Foundayo is initially available via private prescription and is expected to be priced between £100 and £120 per month. This is significantly cheaper than Lilly's own injectable Mounjaro (tirzepatide), which costs approximately £330 per month.
- Prevention of Weight Regain: Clinical trial data suggests that Foundayo is highly effective at helping patients maintain weight loss. Specifically, trials demonstrated that patients who transitioned to daily Foundayo after using injectable GLP-1 therapies avoided regaining weight, addressing a major clinical challenge of GLP-1 therapy.
Khalil Asmar, Vice President of Cardiometabolic Health at Lilly Northern Europe, commented on the UK launch:
"The UK is the first country in Europe where Foundayo is now available. We’re pleased that this means there is another oral treatment option for eligible UK patients alongside licensed injectable treatments."
Regulatory and Clinical Profile
Orforglipron (Foundayo) is a non-peptide, small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. Because it is a non-peptide small molecule (unlike semaglutide, which is a peptide), it is more easily absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, enabling its daily oral dosing without complex absorption-enhancing formulations.
In the UK, Foundayo is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related comorbidity (such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension). While currently limited to private prescriptions, Eli Lilly is actively working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to evaluate Foundayo for potential National Health Service (NHS) coverage for both type 2 diabetes and obesity.
