Alphabet's Waymo has reached an unprecedented scale in its autonomous vehicle (AV) deployment, logging over 220 million rider-only (RO) miles without a human driver through March 2026. This massive dataset, up from previous milestones, represents the equivalent of over 250 human lifetimes behind the wheel and provides statistically indisputable evidence that Level 4 autonomous vehicles are substantially safer than human drivers. Waymo's commercial operations are scaling rapidly, with the fleet now driving over 4 million fully autonomous miles every week.

Statistical Safety Milestones: The June 24, 2026 Update

On June 24, 2026, Waymo released its latest safety performance analysis covering operations across five major metropolitan areas, including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and Atlanta (included for the first time).

The cumulative data demonstrates a massive safety premium. Compared to human drivers operating in the same areas over the same period, the Waymo Driver was involved in:

  • 94% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries.
  • 82% fewer crashes in which an airbag deployed.
  • 82% fewer crashes involving any reported injury.

Each comparison is made on an absolute basis, regardless of which party was at fault in the collision. Waymo's safety performance is equally pronounced when protecting vulnerable road users, recording 93% fewer injury-causing crashes involving pedestrians, 84% fewer involving cyclists, and 84% fewer involving motorcyclists.

In Atlanta alone, where Waymo has driven over 5.4 million fully autonomous miles, the Waymo Driver achieved:

  • 94% fewer airbag-deployment crashes.
  • 86% fewer injury-involving crashes compared to the human benchmark.
  • A typical human driver covering those same miles in Atlanta would have been expected to cause roughly 1.2 serious or fatal injury crashes; the Waymo Driver was involved in zero.

Carol Flannagan, Research Professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), validated the statistical maturity of Waymo's dataset:

“Waymo has reached the point where it is driving enough miles to make direct comparisons to human drivers on crash rates. The consistency of the results across locations helps support the strength of the conclusions...”

Real-World Avoided Crashes

Over the lifetime of its commercial operations, Waymo's safety performance has prevented significant trauma. Compared to human benchmarks, Waymo's deployment has resulted in:

  • 47 fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries.
  • 305 fewer crashes leading to airbag deployment.
  • 707 fewer crashes causing injuries of any kind.

At its current scale of 4 million miles per week, Waymo’s deployment prevents an estimated one serious-injury-or-worse crash every eight days, while avoiding roughly six airbag-deployment crashes and thirteen injury crashes each week.

Swiss Re Claims Breakthrough: Actuarial Proof of Risk Reduction

While crash rates are critical, the insurance industry requires actual claims data to price risk. To address this, Waymo partnered with global reinsurer Swiss Re to conduct a groundbreaking study comparing Waymo's actual liability insurance claims against a human benchmark of over 200 billion miles of exposure and 500,000 claims.

The study, which analyzed 25.3 million fully autonomous miles, revealed an extraordinary reduction in insurance claims:

  • 88% reduction in property damage claims compared to the human baseline.
  • 92% reduction in bodily injury claims compared to the human baseline.
  • When compared to the latest-generation human-driven vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Waymo still demonstrated an 86% reduction in property damage claims and a 90% reduction in bodily injury claims.

In absolute terms, across 25.3 million miles of driverless operation, the Waymo Driver was involved in just nine property damage claims and two bodily injury claims.

Mauricio Peña, Chief Safety Officer at Waymo, explained the significance of the Swiss Re partnership:

“Auto insurance claims data, traditionally used to assess human driver liability and risk, is a powerful tool in evaluating the safety performance of autonomous vehicles. This is a truly groundbreaking study that not only validates the Waymo Driver’s strong safety record, but also provides a scalable framework for ongoing assessment of the impact autonomous vehicles make on road safety.”

This data provides Swiss Re and other major reinsurance players with the actuarial foundation needed to structure commercial AV fleet policies, proving that autonomous ride-hailing virtually eliminates the bodily injury exposure that represents the most volatile and expensive component of traditional auto insurance.
