Viking Pushes Oral VK2735 Into Phase 3 (SUNRISE) — a Committed Milestone Hit, Ignored by the Tape

Viking announced on Oct 14, 2026 the initiation of the SUNRISE Phase 3 clinical program for oral VK2735, its dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist tablet. The program is two 68-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies — SUNRISE-1 in adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (BMI ≥27) plus at least one weight-related comorbidity, and SUNRISE-2 in obese/overweight adults with type 2 diabetes — each targeting 560 adults, randomized to once-daily doses of 27.5 mg, 35 mg, 55 mg or placebo, with percent change in body weight at 68 weeks as the primary endpoint.

CEO Brian Lian positioned the asset as the oral dual-agonist frontrunner: "Oral VK2735 represents the most advanced oral dual GLP-1/GIP agonist in clinical development and has the potential to be positioned as either an induction therapy or in the maintenance setting, increasing the treatment options available to patients and clinicians."

The Phase 2 anchor: VENTURE-Oral showed dose-dependent mean body-weight reductions up to 12.2% at 13 weeks, with up to 97% of treated patients achieving ≥5% loss and 80% achieving ≥10% (vs 10% and 5% on placebo); 98% of drug-related TEAEs were mild or moderate. Viking also started (Oct 6) an oral maintenance-dosing trial testing daily oral, monthly subcutaneous, and every-other-week subcutaneous dosing against placebo — a maintenance-strategy bet that mirrors where the incumbents' marketing is heading. The subcutaneous Phase 3 program is fully enrolled (VANQUISH-1 ~4,500 adults; VANQUISH-2 ~1,000 with T2D; weekly dosing for 78 weeks at 7.5/12.5/17.5 mg).

The market's response: nothing. VKTX closed at $25.17, down 8.0% on the day and 40.3% below its 52-week high with RSI at 24, the market view attributing the slide to "investor concerns over dilution from late-September financing and competition in the obesity-drug market." H.C. Wainwright reiterated Buy/$102 after the initiation and UBS had initiated Buy/$94 — both far above the tape. With Q2-end cash of $125.8M against a $125.2M quarterly operating cash outflow (before the late-September equity/convertible raise), the dilution debate is live.

Meaning: Viking has now cleared every pre-data milestone it promised for 2026 — both formulations in Phase 3, maintenance trial running — and the stock still made new lows.1 The story defers to 2027 readouts; near term, cash burn and the crowded oral landscape (where Foundayo and the Wegovy pill already own the market, see Foundayo Clears EMA's CHMP for Weight Management AND Type 2 Diabetes — a Broader EU Label Than the Wegovy Pill's) keep the equity hostage to sentiment.
