VFC COVID-Shot Delay Draws Senate Democrats' Letter: "Millions of Children… Waiting Weeks for Vaccines Already Available to Families With Commercial Insurance"

Update, September 29, 2026. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sens. Ed Markey and Bernie Sanders sent a letter to CDC Director Erica Schwartz and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. demanding answers on the ~month-long delay in opening Vaccines for Children (VFC) ordering for updated COVID-19 shots — the program covering "more than half of U.S. children," including Medicaid recipients, the uninsured/underinsured, and Native American and Alaska Native children (The Hill, Sept 29, 2026).

The timeline the letter documents: FDA approved the 2026-27 vaccines on Aug. 27, and doses hit retail pharmacies within days; in a typical year states can order within two weeks. But "the CDC did not open up the process for states until Sept. 23" — with shipments still to follow before any dose reaches a clinic. The lawmakers write: "CDC's delay has left millions of children who rely on the VFC program waiting weeks for vaccines already available to families with commercial insurance12," and, pointedly, "Concerningly, this delay follows a pattern of decisions by this Administration to undermine Americans' faith in and access to vaccines." They also flag that HHS's explanations — vague assurances about "finalizing decisions" and claims that COVID is less seasonal than flu — account for nothing: "Neither explanation accounts for the delay. And neither HHS nor CDC has provided an explanation for what remained undecided for four weeks after FDA approval."

HHS's response: spokesperson Emily Hilliard confirmed ordering is open and argued there are no procurement deadlines because "SARS-CoV-2 circulates year-round, with activity varying by region."

Why it matters: the VFC opening ended the access gap but not the accountability question — the letter asks Kennedy and Schwartz to commit that distribution proceeds "without further interruption," and lands as the same agencies face separate scrutiny over vaccine-policy churn (the August executive order directing MMR splitting, ACIP upheaval, and the measles death-count standoff).

  1. An instance of Vacancy and silence now do the damage at America's health agencies. — The damage to the childhood vaccine program flowed from a month of unexplained administrative silence rather than any announced decision. ↩︎

  2. An instance of The childhood vaccine schedule is now settled in courtrooms, not clinics. — Even programmatic access to the schedule now depends on administrative timing that only legislative letters can challenge. ↩︎
