The Friction of the Security Treadmill
For years, critical open-source infrastructure has been run on the unpaid, hyper-extended labor of a handful of individuals. Curl, which runs on billions of devices worldwide, has been under immense pressure, leading creator Daniel Stenberg to pause all submissions on HackerOne and declare email reporting a "dead end" for the month of July.
This decision has sparked a vital debate in the engineering community. While some express security anxieties about a month-long window of unaddressed zero-days, the overwhelming consensus is a defense of human boundaries over corporate expectations.
