In a significant strategic expansion, OpenAI's latest frontier models—GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4—along with its AI software development agent Codex, have reached general availability on Amazon Bedrock. The launch, which comes just a month after Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI announced an expanded partnership, marks a major multi-cloud shift in the enterprise AI landscape.

Historically, Microsoft Azure was OpenAI's exclusive cloud partner, while AWS served as the primary cloud home for Anthropic's models. By bringing its flagship models to Amazon Bedrock, OpenAI is directly challenging Anthropic on its home turf and offering enterprise customers the flexibility to run OpenAI's most capable models within their existing AWS environments.

Under the new integration, enterprises can access GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4 through the Amazon Bedrock Responses API at the exact same per-token pricing offered directly by OpenAI, with no additional infrastructure charges. A major highlight of the release is Codex, which is used by over five million developers weekly for tasks like writing, refactoring, and debugging code. Through Bedrock, enterprise customers can access Codex via pay-per-token pricing, bypassing the traditional seat-based licensing models.

All model inference remains within the customer's selected AWS Region, allowing organizations to maintain strict data residency, governance, and security controls. The integration supports standard AWS enterprise controls including AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), AWS Key Management Service (KMS), and AWS PrivateLink. Crucially, AWS and OpenAI have committed that prompts and responses processed through Bedrock will not be used to train foundation models or shared with third-party model providers.

Looking ahead, AWS plans to expand the partnership by introducing "Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI," allowing enterprises to deploy autonomous AI agents capable of executing complex, multi-step workflows. Future OpenAI cybersecurity innovations, such as the "Daybreak" vulnerability-detection suite, are also expected to join the Bedrock lineup.
