The NVIDIA Circular Vendor-Financing Loop and Systemic Domino Risk
The strategic architecture of the artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout relies on a highly fragile, circular capital-recycling loop and balance-sheet credit support. In its Q2 Fiscal 2027 earnings release (reported August 26, 2026) and recent corporate announcements, NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) revealed a staggering expansion of its financial commitments, customer concentration, and balance-sheet leverage to sustain the AI buildout.
The $105 Billion Ohio Credit-Support Loop (PORTS-Pike & OpenAI)
On August 17, 2026, NVIDIA announced a massive partnership with SB Energy (backed by SoftBank Group and OpenAI) at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio. Under the terms of the deal, SB Energy will build, own, and operate a massive data center complex (planned for up to 8 IT-gigawatts) under a 20-year lease to OpenAI, exclusively hosting NVIDIA AI compute.
To anchor this deal, NVIDIA is providing unprecedented balance-sheet credit support:
- Direct Equity Investment: NVIDIA is investing $1.5 billion directly in SB Energy.
- Residual Value Guarantees: In its Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q, NVIDIA disclosed that its credit support includes residual value guarantees with a cumulative payment obligation capped at $105 billion (under Exhibit 10.1, Form of Residual Value Guaranty).
This represents a classic "credit-support-for-exclusivity" loop. NVIDIA is using its AAA-like credit profile to guarantee the developer's (SB Energy) physical buildout so that OpenAI can lease the facility, ensuring that OpenAI exclusively runs NVIDIA hardware. If OpenAI's model-training demand slows or its lease payments falter, NVIDIA is on the hook for up to $105 billion in physical infrastructure guarantees.
Exploding Accounts Receivable and Customer Concentration
NVIDIA's Q2 FY2027 balance sheet reflects a severe concentration of credit risk:
- Accounts Receivable Ballooning: Accounts receivable reached $63.1 billion, up from $40.71 billion in Q1 FY2027 and $38.466 billion at fiscal year-end 2026.
- Days Sales Outstanding (DSO): DSO rose sharply to 60 days from 45 days sequentially. Management attributed this to "extended payment terms on large, multi-quarter agreements with certain investment-grade customers."
- Extreme Debtor Concentration: Three direct customers accounted for 30%, 18%, and 16% of accounts receivable, representing 64% combined (or $40.38 billion of the $63.1 billion total).
- Revenue Concentration: One direct customer represented 16% of total revenue in Q2 FY2027. For the first half of fiscal 2027 (H1 FY2027), three direct customers represented 16%, 15%, and 13% of total revenue (44% combined), primarily in the Compute & Networking segment.
This concentration indicates that just three buyers are sitting on over $40 billion of unpaid bills to NVIDIA, shifting a massive credit-default risk directly onto NVIDIA's balance sheet.
Skyrocketing Supply Commitments and Debt Issuance
To lock in supply for future generations, NVIDIA has aggressively expanded its liability profile:
- Supply and Capacity Commitments: Skyrocketed to $279 billion, up from $119 billion in Q1 FY2027. This massive increase primarily reflects the procurement of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to support demand over the next several years, creating a massive cash-drain risk if demand softens.
- Debt Issuance: NVIDIA issued $25 billion of senior unsecured notes during the quarter to support general corporate purposes, bringing its long-term debt to $32.4 billion.
The Vera Rubin Transition
