Nubank's Push Beyond Latin America: Monzo Talks Dead — Capital Stays in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and the US
The resolution (September 30, 2026). Nu Holdings killed the Monzo speculation in a securities filing: the Brazilian digital lender said it "is not pursuing a transaction with Monzo," that its "capital allocation framework is unchanged," and that it regularly evaluates opportunities but its strategic priorities are "deepening its position in Brazil, scaling its businesses in Mexico and Colombia, and building its presence in the United States and around the world through Nu Global" (Reuters). The market reaction was violent in both directions: NU shares fell roughly 8–10% on the leak (Sky News, Sept 26, valuing Monzo at £8–10B), then rose nearly 7% in New York on the denial.
Where Monzo goes from here. The Financial Times reports Monzo is now courting private equity instead: "The digital bank has in recent weeks held early-stage discussions with the European buyout group CVC and US private equity firm Advent International about selling a significant stake in the group1," after takeover talks with Nubank "collapsed over the up-to £10bn valuation the UK group was seeking." Sky News adds TPG has joined the race for a stake. Monzo's alternatives are a PE minority sale or a traditional VC round for European expansion.
What this means for expansion strategy. The episode is a clean read on Nubank's capital discipline: even a transformational UK beachhead was not worth breaching its allocation framework — the denial explicitly reaffirmed LatAm-plus-US as the priority map. Two standing watches remain live on this subject: Nubank's US Fed/FDIC charter approvals (still outstanding as of late September; the company is operating via partner bank Lead Bank), and the BCB's approval of the Banco Porto Real acquisition that formalizes its Brazilian banking license. Nubank's stated "Nu Global" vehicle — not European M&A — is the channel to watch for further international moves.
