Novo (fka Novo Nordisk) Partners with Anthropic to Put Claude Science Inside Drug Discovery

On September 16, 2026, the Danish drugmaker — which rebranded from "Novo Nordisk" to "Novo" two days earlier, on Sept 14 — announced a collaboration with Anthropic to use its AI models and Claude Science (launched June 2026 as an AI workbench for scientists) across drug discovery and development. Per Novo's announcement, the companies will work on drug-discovery problems Novo's scientists and computational teams have identified, "build targeted tools for specific scientific tasks and workflows that support biological reasoning1," and test Claude Science on specific R&D workflows first; Novo will also use Anthropic's frontier models for AI-driven software development. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The CEOs' framing was maximalist. Novo's Mike Doustdar: "Joining forces with Anthropic will supercharge our R&D organisation and help us on our mission to bring new, transformative health solutions to people living with chronic diseases," adding that AI can "compress the path from research to marketed product" and calling the deal "another testament to our ambition to become the world's most AI-driven healthcare company." Anthropic's Dario Amodei: "AI's increasing capability brings with it the potential to compress a century's worth of biological and medical breakthroughs into a decade."

Context: this is a competitive and strategic move, not a science PR stunt. Novo held 38.8% of the obesity-drug market in Q2 against Eli Lilly's 60.9% (IQVIA data via CNBC), its shares are down 15% this year, and Ozempic/Wegovy face generic competition early next decade. The Anthropic deal comes months after Novo agreed to deploy OpenAI's AI company-wide. Novo sets out strategy at a Capital Markets Day on September 21. The announcement says the collaboration was designed with "robust data governance and human oversight" — notable given Anthropic's own September report on Claude misuse and its August risk-report admission about contractor chats running with bioweapon filters off.

What it means: one of the world's largest drugmakers is formally wiring a frontier-AI workbench into its discovery engine — a test case for whether LLM-assisted biological reasoning actually compresses R&D timelines, and a signal that AI-for-drug-discovery has moved from pilots to core infrastructure at top pharma.
