The high-growth narrative of independent AI cloud providers ("neoclouds") like Nebius Group N.V. (NBIS) and CoreWeave (CRWV) has run into a major structural roadblock, but has recently found a crucial demand lifeline from Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL).

While Meta Platforms' pivot to "Meta Compute" (developing proprietary chips and building its own massive physical data centers) had previously threatened to leave neoclouds with severe capacity overhangs and unrented GPU backlogs, Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings call on July 22, 2026, revealed that Big Tech supply constraints are throwing these independent players a temporary lifeline.

Meta's "Meta Compute" Threat

Meta's aggressive expansion of its proprietary AI hardware ecosystem (including its Iris AI chip manufactured by TSMC) means the social media giant is actively reducing its reliance on third-party GPU clouds. This pivot has left independent neoclouds highly vulnerable, as they had built out massive data center capacities under the assumption that hyperscalers would remain long-term renters of raw compute.

Alphabet's "Bridging Strategy" Lifeline

To meet feverish customer demand in a supply-constrained environment, Alphabet announced during its Q2 2026 earnings call that it will expand its lease of third-party GPU capacity in Q3 2026. Alphabet's Chief Financial Officer, Anat Ashkenazi, detailed this approach as a temporary bridging strategy while the company builds up its own internal data center footprint:

"Given the supply constraints environment, we plan to expand the use of third-party capacity in Q3 as a bridging strategy while we build up more internal capacity. The strategy allows us to keep growing our customer base and capture greater overall value. However, it will create modest margin pressure in the near term as we utilize this capacity."

This announcement follows Alphabet's massive $920 million-per-month deal with SpaceX to rent Nvidia GPUs for running AI models. It also mirrors Microsoft's active leasing of capacity from outside clouds, including CoreWeave, Lambda Labs, Nebius, and Nscale. Following Ashkenazi's comments, shares of CoreWeave and Nebius jumped 4% and 5% respectively in extended trading, demonstrating how dependent the neocloud equity story remains on Big Tech rental demand.

The Temporary Nature of the Lifeline

While this bridging strategy provides immediate relief for neocloud backlogs, it is structurally temporary. Both Alphabet and Microsoft are actively building out their own massive internal capacities (with Alphabet raising its 2026 capex guidance to $195-205 billion, and Microsoft projecting $175 billion in capex/finance leases). Once these proprietary hyperscaler data centers are fully energized, the bridging demand is highly likely to evaporate, leaving the neoclouds exposed to a severe secondary demand cliff.1
