Micron Redefines Memory Cycle with 16 Take-or-Pay Strategic Customer Agreements in Record Q3 2026

Micron Technology has demonstrated an unprecedented structural transformation of its business model during the 2026 AI memory boom, seeking to tame the extreme cyclicality of the memory market through long-term, binding customer commitments.1 At the KeyBanc Technology Leadership Forum on August 10, 2026, Micron executives provided critical updates on the execution of these agreements, customer demand dynamics, and pricing structures.

Severe Data Center Shortages and "Very High" Prices

Despite memory contract prices reaching historic highs, customer demand shows no signs of slowing down. According to Sumit Sadana, Micron's Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer, customers are actively scrambling to secure DRAM capacity and memory bandwidth, consistently pointing to DRAM as their number one bottleneck today—surpassing power, real estate, data center capacity, or logic wafers.

Sadana noted that the tightest supply-demand imbalance is in the data center segment, where Micron is frequently able to fulfill less than half of customer demand. Looking ahead, Micron expects the supply-demand balance to tighten even further in 2027, potentially making it more constrained than 2026 as AI workloads continue to expand.

Inside the SCA Pricing Structure: Why Price Gains Are Cooling

Micron has officially signed 16 Strategic Customer Agreements (SCAs), which are expected to account for roughly half of its total revenue. These agreements carry binding, take-or-pay terms and run mostly through 2030.

However, as the rate of DRAM contract price increases begins to moderate in late 2026, details have emerged about how pricing is managed within these long-term contracts. Sadana disclosed that most SCA volume carries a price band with a pre-determined ceiling. For the 16 agreements announced during fiscal Q3, that ceiling was set using CQ2 2026 pricing.

This pricing structure explains why Micron's price increases are starting to cool or "moderate" even as the company describes 2027 as being tighter than 2026. Because a significant portion of volume is capped by CQ2 ceilings, Micron is managing a balanced mix of volume growth, product mix improvements, and market pricing rather than relying solely on aggressive price hikes:

"Most SCA volume carries a price band with a ceiling, he said, and for the 16 agreements announced at earnings, that ceiling was set using CQ2 pricing. Future SCAs, however, won’t be anchored to that same benchmark — Sadana said any new agreements going forward will have ceiling prices 'consistent with whatever the market price is at the time the SCAs are signed.'"

The "Made in USA" Front-End Premium

A key structural differentiator for Micron in its SCA negotiations is its domestic manufacturing footprint. While competitors Samsung and SK Hynix are investing in the United States, their investments are structurally different: Samsung's U.S. fabs are focused on logic foundry work rather than memory, while SK Hynix's Indiana project is restricted to back-end packaging and assembly.

This leaves Micron as the sole producer of front-end memory fab manufacturing on U.S. soil. Sadana highlighted that customers highly value this domestic supply chain security and are willing to pay a pricing premium for U.S.-made memory. This "Made in USA" premium has already been negotiated and baked into the pricing of Micron's active SCAs.
