Indonesia's Payments Consolidation: Antom Takes DOKU, 01Fintech Backs DANA as QRIS Volumes Explode
Two strategic bets in one week (late September 2026). DealStreetAsia's week-in-review confirms a consolidation wave among Indonesia's payment platforms: growth-equity firm 01Fintech (01F Group) invested in DANA, one of Indonesia's leading e-wallets, and separately "Indonesia-based payment fintech DOKU has rebranded to 'DOKU by Antom', as Ant International's merchant payment and digitisation arm Antom emerges as the largest shareholder in the company, according to corporate filings seen by DealStreetAsia."
Why the strategics are buying in. The 01F/DANA announcement (Antara, Sept 28) cites Indonesia's digital economy with "digital payments projected to approach USD1 trillion by 2030," and lays out the playbook: connect DANA's MSME base "with scalable lending and working capital solutions," add "micro-insurance, digital savings and wealth-building tools," and use 01F's network "to explore more efficient cross-border payment solutions for Indonesian merchants and consumers." DANA's reach into Tier 2–4 regions is the stated asset.
The adoption data underneath (August 2026, Bank Indonesia). Per Antara (Sept 23): "The volume of digital payment transactions reached 6.11 billion—growing 40.36 percent yoy in August 2026—supported by the expansion of digital payment acceptance" (BI Governor Destry Damayanti). QRIS grew 67.22% YoY; mobile banking +47.08%; BI-FAST processed 549M retail transactions worth Rp1,346 trillion (~US$75.62B), +37.72% YoY.
What it means for a US strategy team: Indonesia's wallet layer is consolidating around well-capitalized regional strategics (Ant International) and specialist fintech PE (01F), not US players. Entry is increasingly via partnership with an incumbent wallet or infrastructure (QRIS/BI-FAST rails), not greenfield. The regulatory backdrop for such entry is tracked in Indonesia's 2026 Fintech Regulatory Landscape: Payments Overhaul, Foreign Capital Caps, and Strict Crypto Offerings; the regional QR/A2A landscape in SEA QR Rails: Indonesia's QRIS Nearly Doubles H1 2026 Volumes; Digital Rupiah Gets a Sharia Fatwa.
