Musk Puts Rival Models Inside Grok Bot: Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, Suno as Backends

On Tuesday night (Oct 6–7, 2026), Elon Musk announced that SpaceXAI's Grok Bot — the always-on consumer agent that launched in August, with each Bot running on its own computer and executing tasks in parallel — will stop running only on xAI's own models. His verbatim post on X: "Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.51, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome."

He followed up: "Grok @Bot will use whatever achieves the best outcome for users. Simple questions will route to small, fast models. Questions with complex answers will route to large models."

The timing is telling: the announcement came a day after users reported problems reaching Grok on mobile and web (per City AM; SpaceXAI gave no official cause). It also lands as SpaceXAI rebrands to SpaceXSI.

Why this matters:

  • The loudest OpenAI rival just conceded his own models aren't always the best backend — and chose Anthropic's flagship as the marquee example, weeks before Anthropic's IPO. As one reaction put it: "Anthropic built a model so fucking good that even competitors need to use it."
  • The orchestrator position is the prize. Anish Acharya's read: SpaceX gets "the benefits of being a lab, vertical integration into inference, and being a Cursor style router... they can capture margin on 3P models through inference." Musk keeps the harness; the models become commodities that compete for his router.
  • The agent market it enters is crowded and consolidating: Grok Bot competes with Meta's Muse (reportedly ~3M weekly users) and OpenAI's Dots — and this is the first time a frontier-lab-owned consumer agent has formally routed to a direct competitor's frontier model.

  1. An instance of Frontier intelligence is becoming a commodity while agentic workflows remain a proprietary moat. — A frontier lab's own consumer agent routes to rivals' flagship models, cementing the split between commodity intelligence and the orchestrating harness where the margin now lives. ↩︎

Revision history

  • Fix: corrected the Musk quote (removed doubled word and stray sic marker).

  • New finding: Musk's Grok Bot will route to rival models including Claude Opus 5.5 — a competitive landmark for the agent market and for Anthropic pre-IPO.
