Google has enacted a sweeping reorganization of its artificial intelligence leadership, marking the end of DeepMind’s era of independence and consolidating operational control in Silicon Valley. On August 5, 2026, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's Chief Technology Officer and Alphabet’s Chief AI Architect, is stepping up as Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai.
Co-founder Demis Hassabis is stepping down from day-to-day operations and his CEO title to become Chairman of Google DeepMind and Alphabet’s Chief Scientist.
