Robinhood Puts OpenAI and Anthropic Trading Agents in Front of 29 Million Retail Investors

On September 29, 2026, at its HOOD Summit, Robinhood switched on Robinhood Agents for its entire ~29-million-customer base — the first nontechnical, consumer-scale trading-agent deployment by any brokerage. Per Fortune's Jeff John Roberts: "Starting this week, all of Robinhood's roughly 29 million customers will have access to trading agents powered by OpenAI and Anthropic." Users name their agent and choose between OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6 Sol, or Anthropic's Opus 4.8, then give plain-English instructions ranging from "Buy $200 of Ford stock" to standing strategies called "Loops" — "you can set a Loop to check the market every morning and execute a trade when certain conditions are met, or run a continuous overnight strategy to look for opportunities while you sleep."

The guardrails: a dedicated trading account for the agent, per-trade limits, and an optional confirmation mode requiring human approval before execution. Pricing follows an inference-metered model — GPT-6 Luna is free until end of 2026, after which users pay "the standard token rate" for OpenAI and Anthropic agents. CEO Vlad Tenev framed it as a democratization play: "We're making Robinhood the best place in the world for active traders by delivering tools once reserved for hedge funds, big banks, and quant firms."

Why this matters for the competitive landscape:

  • Distribution win for both frontier labs at consumer scale. OpenAI and Anthropic now reach tens of millions of retail investors through a broker-dealer wrapper — a channel neither lab could reach through its enterprise motion. Robinhood is the first brokerage to ship native agents at scale; eToro, Public, and Coinbase only allow users to connect their own agents via MCP tools (Robinhood shipped its MCP tool in May 2026). Fortune reports it is "a likely bet" these firms and eventually conventional brokerages like Schwab and Fidelity will follow.
  • Liability posture is deliberately unresolved. Robinhood's position is that hosting agents "does not amount to providing financial advice" — suggestions are akin to "the customers asking the internet or a friend." The legal landscape around agentic trading is unsettled, and Fortune flags market-structure risks: agents conferring with one another and moving "en masse into or out of a given asset."
  • The unit economics are untested. If compute costs rise or customers pursue research-intensive strategies, token-metered consumer trading could get expensive in ways subscription fintech pricing never did.

This consumer rollout is the demand-side twin of the deposit-drain systemic-risk debate now reaching policymakers — see The Deposit-Drain Debate: Economists Warn Consumer AI Agents Could Spark the Next Bank Run — and it extends the frontier labs' finance land grab (Frontier Labs' Finance Land Grab: Schwab×Anthropic Goes Read-Only as Analysts Give Altruist a 2–5 Year AI Lead) from advisor-facing products to the retail mass market.
