Colombia's Bre-B Redefines Real-Time Payments: Rapid Scale and Immediate Cross-Border Integrations
Colombia's national real-time payment system, Bre-B, developed by the Central Bank (Banco de la República), is entering a critical scaling and interoperability phase designed to replicate the success of Brazil's Pix.
Unprecedented Scaling: 100 Million Keys Registered
Within just six months of its initial introduction, the Bre-B ecosystem surpassed 100 million registered keys (llaves) as of April 2026. This rapid adoption underscores the high demand for interoperable, real-time, account-to-account (A2A) transfers in Colombia's historically cash-heavy economy.
Official Rollout and Interoperability Schedule
Banco de la República has established a definitive timeline to transition Bre-B from a voluntary or fragmented system to full-scale, mandatory national interoperability in late 2026:
- September 23, 2026: The Central Bank will officially launch the central settlement mechanism that supports the clearing of transactions 24/7 across the entire ecosystem, enabling seamless interbank transfers.
- October 6, 2026: Bre-B will transition to full-scale operations for person-to-business (P2B) payments. Under this mandate, all participating financial institutions must provide a standardized Bre-B button or zone within their digital channels to facilitate instant merchant payments.
For corporate treasurers and fintechs, this always-on infrastructure reduces Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), enhances intraday cash forecasting, and eliminates dependency on costly credit card rails1 and traditional collections.
