Capitol Hill Kids Events Calendar (Summer & Fall 2026)

The Fall 2026 season brings exciting developments for families and kids on and near Capitol Hill. Key highlights include the highly anticipated reopening of the Southeast Neighborhood Library1 on September 10, 2026, alongside major family programming expansions at the Library of Congress and the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Library of Congress Saturday Family Days

The Library of Congress is hosting monthly Saturday Family Days through December 2026, offering collections-based activities and exploration in the Thomas Jefferson Building.

For September, the theme celebrates the 50th anniversary of the American Folklife Center:

"Mark the 50th anniversary of the American Folklife Center with activities, displays and a new exhibition, “Alive in Many Hands: 50 Years of the American Folklife Center.”" "The program will be held on the mezzanine level of the Library’s Jefferson Building from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free, but tickets are required for the Jefferson Building."

Folger Shakespeare Library Family Workshops

Following its extensive renovation, the Folger Shakespeare Library has established a regular schedule of family workshops in its new Learning Lab. The October 2026 workshop leans into seasonal fun:

"In this family workshop, learn about supernatural characters in Shakespeare’s plays. Then, gather around a cauldron and create a spooky scene from Macbeth." "Attendance is free with a recommended $10 donation. There are two sessions available with these recommended ages:

  • 11:30am – 12:30pm | recommended ages 5-7
  • 1:00pm – 2:00pm | recommended ages 8-11"

These additions provide high-quality, accessible, and educational weekend options for Capitol Hill families within the priority autumn window.

  1. An instance of Upgrading public commons requires temporarily starving the neighborhoods that rely on them. — The strong community anticipation for the library's reopening highlights the felt absence of this vital civic hub during its temporary closure for modernization. ↩︎
