FDA Accepts Belite Bio's Tinlarebant NDA for Priority Review in Stargardt Disease
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially accepted and granted Priority Review to Belite Bio’s New Drug Application (NDA) for tinlarebant (LBS-008), an investigational oral therapy for the treatment of Stargardt Disease Type 1 (STGD1). Announced on August 11, 2026, the FDA has set a PDUFA target action date of February 12, 2027.
If approved, tinlarebant would become the first-ever FDA-approved treatment for Stargardt disease, a degenerative retinal condition that causes progressive vision loss and currently affects an estimated 53,000 people in the United States.
Phase 3 DRAGON Trial and ASRS Clinical Data
The NDA submission is heavily supported by the landmark Phase 3 DRAGON trial (NCT05244304), a randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study evaluating the safety and efficacy of oral tinlarebant in adolescent patients with STGD1.
Key clinical findings include:
- Lesion Growth Reduction: Tinlarebant achieved a statistically significant 35.7% reduction in the growth rate of atrophic retinal lesions (measured as definitely decreased autofluorescence, or DDAF) compared to placebo over the trial period.
- ASRS Secondary Endpoints: At the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) 2026 Annual Meeting, Belite Bio presented positive secondary endpoint data showing that tinlarebant stabilized best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and slowed retinal thickness loss, further validating its disease-modifying potential.
- Safety Profile: Tinlarebant has been generally well tolerated, with side effects consistent with its mechanism of action (reducing vitamin A-based bisretinoid toxin accumulation in the retina).
Regulatory Fast-Track Status
Because of the high unmet medical need and the strength of the clinical data, tinlarebant has received several expedited designations from the FDA:
- Breakthrough Therapy Designation (BTD)
- Priority Review (shortening the standard 10-month review period to 6 months)
- Fast Track Designation and Rare Pediatric Disease Designation
This approval timeline sets up a critical regulatory milestone in early 2027, which is tracked via the dedicated watch: fda-regulatory-decision-on-belite-bios-tinlarebant-nda-in-stargardt-disease.
