Australia Enters Critical Phase with First Local Transmission and Mass Mortality of H5N1 Bird Flu in Wildlife
Australia has entered a new and highly concerning phase in its battle against the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (clade 2.3.4.4b). On July 29, 2026, Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins confirmed that local transmission of the deadly strain had occurred between a number of resident greater crested terns in South Australia.
This announcement marks the first time the virus has been confirmed as spreading locally within the Australian native bird population, rather than arriving via isolated migratory seabirds from the Southern Ocean.
First Mass Mortality Event
The situation escalated rapidly on August 3, 2026, when Australia confirmed its first mass mortality event linked to H5N1. Helicopter and aerial surveillance teams south of Adelaide (near Cape Jaffa and Cape Le Grand) discovered a group of 49 dead and 35 sick greater crested terns. Testing confirmed that H5N1 was present and was the highly likely cause of death.
Additionally, on July 30, 2026, Victoria confirmed its first-ever case of the H5N1 virus, detected in a greater crested tern found near Portland in the state's south-west. As of early August, H5N1 cases have been confirmed in wild birds across five Australian states: Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland.
Major Threat to Endangered Wildlife
The local spread of H5N1 poses an existential threat to Australia's unique wildlife. More than 150 native bird species have been assessed as being at "very high risk" of extinction or major decline if infected, including:
- The endangered fairy tern and red goshawk.
- The plains-wanderer, shy albatross, black swan, and western hooded plover.
Furthermore, there is deep concern regarding potential transmission to marine mammals. Five of the South Australian bird flu detections occurred at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, which is home to a highly vulnerable population of endangered Australian sea lions.
Poultry Farms on High Alert
While H5N1 has spread widely in wild bird populations, there have been no confirmed detections of the strain in Australian commercial poultry or other livestock. However, the risk of transmission has increased dramatically. Biosecurity protocols have been tightened across the country, as poultry farmers worry that wild birds could introduce the virus to domestic flocks through direct contact or by contaminating water, feed, and equipment.
