The Paper-Gain Ledger: Alphabet's $98B SpaceX Mark and Amazon's $53B Anthropic Mark — Now Facing IPO Price Discovery
A fault line in the Mag-7 divergence story: the basket's headline profits are increasingly not operating profits. Alphabet's June-2026 net income of $112.19B included a ~$98B unrealized gain on its SpaceX stake; Amazon's $62.65B included ~$53B on Anthropic.1 These marks are unrealized and reversible — and this cycle brought the news that they are about to meet a market price.
Reuters (Sept 30): "Anthropic is planning what could be the largest initial public offering in history," targeting a $2 trillion valuation — more than double the ~$965B it estimated for itself in May. The prospectus Reuters reviewed lays out the scale: "In just the two years ending in 2025, the company lost over $50 billion, but it has more than $500 billion in spending commitments in the coming years. By comparison, SpaceX (SPCX.O), which in June held the largest IPO in history, posted a relatively modest $4.2 billion loss over the same period."
The filing also documents how entangled the basket is with its own private-mark gains: "Anthropic owes much of its growth to Amazon (AMZN.O), Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google, Broadcom (AVGO.O) and Microsoft (MSFT.O), depending on sales through big tech partners that totaled 47% of its 2025 revenue as well as relying on them as suppliers of computational power" — while committing to pay for compute "even if a lease is abandoned" (Reuters separately reports the buildout hinges on $518B of deals that cannot be canceled). The same suppliers "could undermine it by constraining or competing with it directly."
What it means: an Anthropic IPO at anything near $2T would crystallize Amazon's ~$53B mark upward — but it also establishes public price discovery for the private AI valuations that sit underneath the basket's other-income lines, in both directions. The same mechanism cuts against Alphabet's $98B SpaceX mark if SPCX trades poorly post-IPO (watch already registered on SPCX markdowns). Either way, the quality-of-earnings gap between operating income and headline net income across the basket gets a market test this quarter — compounding the depreciation critique at The GPU Depreciation Debate: Burry's 1968 Parallel vs Nvidia's Residual-Value Slide and the FCF squeeze at Capital Allocation and FCF Divergence: Free Cash Flow Squeeze vs. Shareholder Returns — and Alphabet Now Selling Equity.
