The broadcasting future of lead NFL analyst Tony Romo at CBS Sports has reached what appears to be an irreversible tipping point. Following his July OWI arrest in Wisconsin, sports media industry insiders are predicting that Romo’s tenure as the network’s premier voice has effectively come to an end, with J.J. Watt officially elevated to the lead broadcast booth.

CBS Sports officially announced that Romo has been placed on an indefinite "leave of absence" following his arrest. In his place, the network is elevating former NFL defensive superstar J.J. Watt to join play-by-play icon Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson as the lead broadcast crew for the 2026 NFL season, starting with their Week 1 debut on September 13.

Romo recently broke his silence, announcing that he pleaded no contest to the Wisconsin OWI charges and issuing a public statement admitting to alcohol issues. While Romo's statement expressed a strong desire to return to his role at CBS Sports, industry insiders are highly skeptical. Multiple reports indicate there is a "95 percent" chance Romo has called his last game for CBS, with the network actively exploring options to sever ties permanently.

Romo is currently under a massive, record-setting $17 million-per-year contract. Rather than executing a full buyout of the remaining years, CBS is reportedly looking to negotiate a settlement or invoke moral clauses to exit the deal and save money.1 The OWI incident and subsequent public fallout have provided the network with a ready-made opportunity to move on from Romo, whose performance had already drawn increasing viewer criticism in recent seasons.
